Idaho State Capitol Building

Since taking Government and Politics my senior year of high school I have always been interested in the history and workings of the government. I couldn’t think of a better place to spend the next 4 years than in Boise, with the capitol building just a few blocks from campus. Obviously, this had to be my next adventure!

My wonderful friend Michelle (who also wants to be a history teacher and was just as excited as me) and I set out on our bikes to check out our beautiful capitol building. From campus, it was just over a mile to bike there, which was very convenient for us considering our lack of cars. From the outside, the capitol building is grand and ornate. Once we stepped inside we were both struck by the white marble covering practically every inch. We started at the Garden Level where there were brochures that discussed the history of Idaho and an interactive exhibit.

We made our way up to the third floor which was were the Senate and House viewing decks are located. As we stepped into the viewing area I was impressed with the tradition of both rooms. That is something that to me is remarkable about the US Government in general; the way we stick with traditions that are hundreds of years old, but that make us the nation we are! Going into those two rooms was definitely my favorite part of the whole experience.

The Idaho Capitol Building is the perfect adventure for any history buff or someone who is interested in learning more about the going-ons in their state government. It is a completely free and accessible building to anyone and something I believe everyone should see at some point!
